Call it a marvel. Call it impossible. Whatever you call it, no one can resist the wonder of a "solid" object that's made of thin air!

To achieve these effects, the Mirage® utilizes a patented technology of two concealed, opposing parabolic mirrors. In overall appearance, Mirage® resembles a small wok with a 6-inch circular opening in the top. The physical object to be converted to a hologram is placed in the concave center of the bottom mirror. A hologram instantly projects up through this aperature, appearing to the viewer as a truly solid object.

The marvels of this 22 inch diameter device are numerous:

Definitely "something fishy" in the Giant Mirage®

What you are looking at here is a Mirage® hologram of live goldfish. This effect was created by Ms. Jill Britton, mathematics professor at Camosun College, Victoria, B.C., Canada. Although it appears that the fish are swimming where the eye sees them, actually your fingers would pass right through.
